Seller Spotlight: Darrin – A 7-Figure Seller Who Isn’t Afraid of Competitive Niches
Meet Darrin who’s a 7 Figure Seller based in Canada and member of my private group coaching program.
He sells in a very competitive niche (filtration units) and one of the other students said that she was surprised at his contrarian mindset.
Because he is not afraid of “super competitive” niches.
It’s not that he has an unlimited budget to pour into ad spend.
In fact he strategically enters crowded niches because the pie is HUGE.
And if he can take a piece of that pie selling that is still worthwhile for him because they add up.
Not only that, he has a number of products that add up to his bottom line so it’s a volume strategy.
The product he selects is also replenishable so he benefits from subscribe and save, or customer reorders.
This increases the LTV, lifetime value of customers.
Here are the key takeaways for sellers.
1. Look for Volume, Not Just Margins
Many sellers avoid competitive niches, fearing high PPC costs and market saturation. But Darrin embraces them because he understands that even a small slice of a big pie can be profitable. Instead of obsessing over ultra-low competition products, he looks for high-volume markets where demand is already proven.
2. Replenishable Products = Built-In Recurring Revenue
Darrin focuses on products that naturally lend themselves to reorders—filters, consumables, and everyday necessities. Unlike sellers constantly chasing new customers, he benefits from long-term customer retention, subscribe-and-save, and repeat purchases. His revenue doesn’t depend on new customer acquisition alone.
3. Diversification Instead of a One-Product Wonder
Most Amazon sellers dream of finding a single product that dominates, but Darrin builds his success by launching multiple smaller winners. Instead of banking on one hero SKU, he layers multiple products that collectively drive strong sales. This minimizes risk and creates multiple income streams.
4. Play the Long Game—Not a Quick Cash Grab
Many sellers follow the same guru advice: “Find a low-competition, high-margin product with X% profit and low reviews.” But these markets get saturated fast. Instead, Darrin plays a long-term strategy, focusing on steady cash flow, repeat customers, and a diversified portfolio rather than gambling on trends.
Key Takeaway: Think Bigger, Think Differently
Darrin’s success isn’t from luck—it’s from seeing opportunities where others see obstacles. If everyone zigs, he zags. Instead of following the latest “Amazon hack,” he focuses on fundamentals: demand, recurring sales, and portfolio growth.
For sellers looking to grow beyond six figures, the lesson is clear: Don’t just follow what everyone else is doing. Look deeper, think bigger, and play the long game.
The big news recently in AI was the Chinese AI upstart DeepSeek which disrupted the whole AI industry with it’s news of how it was able to create a LLM that is nearly equivalent to ChatGPT at a fraction of the cost and time.
This sent shockwaves through the whole world leading to a crash of Nvidia stock because the chips are now thought to be less important than before because DeepSeek based in China was not able to access the most powerful chip technology (there’s controversy behind this as well).
In any case, the good news for ecom sellers is that DeepSeek has made their AI OPEN SOURCE.
This is like saying a restaurant owner is not only offering food but is giving away their recipes for FREE.
And anyone can use the source code (i.e. recipe) to incorporate it into their own AI LLM or even create an offline AI for their own use and not privy to privacy concerns.
If you want to test out DeepSeek R1, their reasoning model which actually shows you it’s thinking process like a real human, you can try it out for free at Perplexity.
See my results below and you can see the reasoning behind how it came up with this table comparing the pros and cons of DeepSeek, ChatGPT 4o, Sonnet 3.5, and Gemini
